NINE NINE THROUGH TWELVE
7 X 22 X 4.5 INCHES, WOOD, AND PEZ DISPENSERS
7 X 22 X 4.5 INCHES, WOOD, AND PEZ DISPENSERS
When my mother passed away we were going through some old boxes and found a shoebox full of old Pez dispensers that I collected as a kid. Some were quite valuable but some were more common and I also had duplicates. The ones I used in this sculpture were American icons like Mickey Mouse and Santa Claus. When I turned them upside down they reminded me of the twin towers of the World Trade Center. I decided to put them in a 4 panel box, which was reminiscent of comic strips where you might actually find characters like Donald Duck, to create a sequence of events. The title refers to the days leading up to the destruction of the twin towers and the day after. Like Mickey, Donald and Santa, the World Trade Center was iconic. The somber, mournful black, unifies the piece in a manner like the monochromatic abstract expressionist, Louise Nevelson.
