I was inspired by an antique corn sheller that belonged to my grandfather (Ferd Morrison) to create an assemblage sculpture that incorporated musical elements. Raised in Western North Carolina, my grandfather loved to listen to me pick the banjo and would do a little "buck dancing" if the spirit moved him. I liked the hinge on the corn sheller and decided to open it up and mount it on laminated blocks of wood with some hand carved instrument necks. My grandfather referred to the early stages of romance (huggin' and kissin') as neckin'. Since there is usually a certain amount of tension to the first time a couple engages in courtship, I wanted to make sure the instrument necks were up against each other. The handle on the sheller has been reversed to point inward and the strings represent the lyrical tones required to "make beautiful music" together. But there are also tentacles which ensnare anyone foolish enough to stroke them.
