JARVIS AND MILDRED
13 X 4.5 X 4 INCHES, WOOD, METAL AND GLASS
13 X 4.5 X 4 INCHES, WOOD, METAL AND GLASS
Jarvis and Mildred were my parents and this piece is in their honor. My father was a Southern Baptist minister whose hobby was woodworking. The metal part is a drill press vise. The perfume bottle inside is the first Christmas present I bought my mom on my own with my own money when I was young, so it holds a special memory for me. When my father died, it dealt my mother a crushing blow. I think it is ironic that the top of the bottle resembles a church steeple, as my mother also found the demands and expectations of being a pastor's wife restrictive.
I am drawn to pieces which illustrate destruction with the potential for further destruction inherent. The loss of my parents affected me and one day my own death will affect my daughters. |
